Good sources of information for research posters on Andean subjects
- Anthropology Plus: Search for books and individual academic articles by subject, author, region, etc. You get bibliographic references, but not their text. Good coverage of Andean archaeology and anthropology.
- Academic Search (Ebsco): Search for books and individual academic articles. Some results are just references, while others offer abstracts or full text. Choose the "SFX" option when it is offered to get abstracts or full text.
- Anthropological Index Online: Search for books and individual articles in the huge Anthropology Library of the British Museum. You get bibliographic references, but not their text, on screen, and can have the references emailed to you.
- JSTOR: Search for books and individual academic articles, with the complete articles available online. More limited coverage than other databases, but more convenient because you get the full text immediately.
- Social Sciences Index: Search for books and individual academic articles. Some results are just references, while others offer links to abstracts or full text. Choose the "SFX" option when it is offered to get abstracts or full text.
Expand your bibliography once you have found a few good references
- Social Sciences Citation Index: This database lets you search for other articles that cite the work of an author you have already found. Not elegant, but very useful. This often turns up sources that don't include the particular words that you were originally searching for, but deal with closely related subjects.
What use are a bunch of references without the text?
A lot. Collect some references with promising titles from the sources above. Search for the journals or books in Snoopy. Many of your items will not be here at SSU, but just click the "Link+" button at the bottom of the Snoopy page to access a wide network of other libraries. You will be surprised how many obscure items turn up there and can be delivered to SSU in a few days. If it isn't available on Link+, you can request an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) online. ILL items often take only a week or two to arrive. You have to start a little before the deadline, but the delays really are not too bad.
So get moving now! You'll be glad you did later on.
